Trusted Toronto plumbers offering expert repairs, installations, and emergency services with guaranteed satisfaction.
The City of Toronto is actively enhancing its extensive network of underground pipes, sewers, and catchbasins. However, these improvements alone are not sufficient to fully safeguard homes against basement flooding, especially as climate change increases the frequency of severe storms.
Homeowners are encouraged to proactively reduce their risk of basement flooding. In support of this, the City offers the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program. Under this program, owners of single-family, duplex, or triplex residential homes can access a financial subsidy of up to $3,200 per property. This subsidy can be used towards the installation of flood protection measures such as back-water valves, sump pumps, and the severance and capping of the home’s storm sewer connection, among other interventions. These measures are crucial in enhancing home safety and resilience against flooding events.

Flooding can lead to a concerning issue where sewage from sanitary sewer lines backs up into homes through drainpipes. This not only results in damage that is both challenging and expensive to repair, but it also poses significant health hazards. One effective measure to prevent such sewage backups is the installation of backflow valves.
These valves are specifically designed to block sewage from flowing back into the house, providing a critical line of defense against this unpleasant and dangerous problem.
ANTA Plumbing has the solution to any of your drain issues, whether it is roots in drains, sewer backup, blocked drain, floor drain, sump pump problems, or whatever plumbing service you require. We offer the following drain services
New construction. Back Water Valve must be installed.
Existing houses. Municipal Building Codes require you to have a backwater valve if your plumbing fixtures are below the top of the first upstream manhole (1) on picture on your street.
Home (A) does not need a backwater valve. This home should never experience a flooded basement due to a sewer backup because all plumbing fixtures and drain are located higher compared with the first upstream manhole on the street.
Drains on the first floor of Home (B) might be safe as it is slightly higher (must be at least 24″ higher) than the first upstream sanitary sewer manhole cover. When the second floor living space is installed, it is adwisable to install a back water valve. Drain fixture in the basement of Home (B) would be below the level of the first upstream manhole and sewage backups could occur without a backwater valve. It is recommended to install back water valve
Drain in Home (C) would be located below the level of the first upstream sewer manhole cover. This home would require the installation of a backwater valve.
A backwater valve is an essential fixture installed on the sewer line in the basement of a home, designed specifically to prevent sewer backflows. It operates on a one-way system, allowing sewage to exit but preventing it from flowing back into the home.
In the Province of Ontario, the Mainline Fullport Backwater Valve is distinguished as the only backwater valve approved for home installation on the main sanitary sewer lateral. This approval highlights its effectiveness and reliability in safeguarding homes against the risks associated with sewer backflows.

Take a close look at Basement Flooding Subsidy Program running by City of Toronto. To assist homeowners, the City offers owners of single-family, duplex and triplex residential homes a financial subsidy of up to $3,200 per property to install flood protection devices including a back-water valve, sump pump, and pipe severance and capping of the home’s storm sewer or external weeping tile connection.
A sump pump is a pump used to remove water that has accumulated in a sump pit. A sump pit, commonly found in the home basement, is simply a hole to collect water.
Used sump pump The water may enter via the perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system, funneling into the pit, or may arrive because of rain or because of natural ground water, if the basement is below the water table level.
In some cases, a sump pump is used when a lower floor is below the municipal sewer lines, to pump grey water or black water waste from that floor to the sewer lines
Sump pumps are installed particularly where basement flooding is seen as a problem, but are also used to ameliorate dampness where the water table is normally above the foundation of a home. Sump pumps send water away from a house to any place where it no longer presents a problem, such as a municipal storm drain or a dry well. Older properties may have their sump pumps connected to the sanitary sewer, but this is frowned upon now (and may be against the plumbing code) because it can overwhelm the municipal sewage treatment system.
We’ve got interesting emergency call with “strange noises coming up from sump pump“. When we reached the place, we found sump pump installed without back flow preventer. What does it mean? In outdoor plumbing, any supply line must be fitted with a device known as a back flow preventer. Back flow preventer ensure that contaminated water is never siphoned back into household plumbing system by a sudden drop in pressure, such as might occur if a supply main ruptures.
